“Color is a power which directly influences the soul.” Wassily Kandinsky

This is a very powerful quote, but it is very true and relates to the colours you finally choose when designing your kitchen.

One of the best ways to think about colour is to think of it as as a tool that you can use in your kitchen design to achieve not only the style you desire, but also the mood you want to feel. In model times the idea of colour psychology has gained traction, and scientists have found that even though our perceptions of colours may be subjective, some colours have more impact on us than others.

If you have a dowdy kitchen that could use a boost of energy, or a hectic kitchen that desperately needs some peace and tranquility, painting a wall or adding a decorative pop of colour can make all of the difference

Here are some ideas around colour and the associated effects.

Bright red is a vibrant stimulating colour that conveys courage. It is perfect for instances where you want to raise your self-confidence. However, too much bright red can leave you feeling over-excited or even agitated, so, it might be a good idea to be sparing. If you choose bright red for your kitchen, try to balance it out with some cool, calming colours too.

Pink is connected to the heart, and is a really soothing color that promotes love, tenderness, and appreciation for beauty. It can also be a very comforting colour, which works great in the area of increasing a person’s willingness to be receptive and sympathetic. Flowers, throw rugs, and other decorative points are wonderful ways to tactfully integrate pink into any kitchen.

Orange is the colour of confidence, laughter and celebration. This vibrant hue adds a youthful exuberance to your life, and literally has the ability to make you feel a little younger. Orange also benefits your ability to confidently express yourself.  You could also add a warm terracotta coloured wall, or even some wall art, to encourage more joy in this space

Green evokes thoughts of nature, spring-time, new beginnings, and wealth.  It correlates the fertility of nature with the riches of life – in terms of finance, as well as in terms of general prosperity. So you could breathe new life into your kitchen by incorporating this popular accent colour, in one of its many shades.
