Don’t Forget Your Kitchen!

Over the past few weeks we have enjoyed sharing a series of posts with you, all focused on getting the best out of a custom design kitchen extension.

Once an extension project has commenced, it is easy to get caught up in the minute detail of planning permissions, budgets and builders. So much so, it is altogether possible to forget the best bit – the bespoke designed kitchen! A common mistake we often see when helping clients with planning and designing a kitchen extension, is leaving the choice of kitchen until quite late into the building project.

Deciding the style and level of quality of the kitchen that works for your space should be one of the first considerations. By choosing your design, and working on it alongside your architect, you can tweak the extension to suit the kitchen. Often  this can be in just a few key areas or details, and it really ensures you are able to make the very most of your new space.

We suggest you kick-start the process by asking yourself these key questions, whilst considering the answers:

How do you move around your kitchen?
Elements that you often use at the same time (such as the fridge and work surface) should be close together.

Where do you prepare food?
Put your worktop space where you like to prepare food (possibly next to the hob).

How much storage do you need?

Do you need / would you like more than you currently have, and would you prefer open shelving or big, deep cupboards?

Who will you be entertaining in your kitchen?

You may want space for a table and/or an island, where friends and family can sit and talk to you while you work.

Which utensils and crockery do you use the most?

Ensure they are easily accessible in your design, as if not this will drive you nuts!

Do you have a lot of gadgets?

If you want them on display, you will need lots of worktop space. If they are to be tucked away, you will need deep cupboards.

Do you have room for the large appliances you want?

For example, range cookers or American-style fridge freezers will take up a lot of space.

A well-planned kitchen extension has the potential to turn even the humblest of properties into a comfortable, stylish, and light-filled home. With the right design and execution, you can create a wonderful new zone that not only transforms the way you interact with your living environment, but also adds significant value.
